Click the Clean button on the app (or right on the vac), and the Roomba goes about its business. It uses the camera and some other sensors to travel in lines, and along the corners of the room. It doubles back over spots where it detects excessive dirt and dust .The Roomba 980’s camera doesn’t present a privacy concern, but even so, iRobot took extra precautions. The new vacuum erases its map and video footage 90 minutes after its cleaning job, and the footage never gets transmitted to the cloud or anywhere else, James Baussmann, an iRobot spokesman told the Journal. "Because it dumps the map, the Roomba 980 has to remap your rooms every time." That isn’t an issue for cleaning, however, because it prevents it from getting confused when there are changes to lighting, furniture and doorways, says iRobot. The Roomba 980 is designed to clean two to three rooms on a single charge (which takes up to 3 hours). If you want the Roomba 980 to clean your entire home, or at least one full floor, it can pull it off, though it may stop and recharge in the middle of a mission. It’s also more powerful than its predecessor. Mr. Baussmann said that the Roomba 980 has twice the vacuuming power of the $700 Roomba 880. The Roomba 980 won’t be cheap, either, with a $900 price tag when it arrives in stores this October.
