A next-generation dash cam DVR that includes Forward Collision Warning was announced Wednesday by Garmin.

The new Dash Cam 35 now includes alerts that help encourage safer driving such as Forward Collision Warnings that alert drivers when they are traveling too close to the car ahead. It also provides red light or speed camera warnings.

The new model and a step down Dash Cam 30 (without driver alerts) are high-definition standalone driving recorders that mount to a windshield and record footage in a continuous loop. They start recording when the vehicle is turned on and stop when it is turned off, serving as “a driver’s true eyewitness on the road.”

An Incident Detection (G-sensor) automatically saves video footage on impact. The model 35 with GPS allows the camera to label footage with date, time, latitude, longitude and speed. On the model 30, without GPS, users can manually set date and time.

Both models capture video in 1080p, 720p or WGA and work in low light conditions. The model 35 has a 3 inch LCD display and the 30 has a 1.4-inch LCD display so you can playback video footage directly on the devices (that can also act as removable cameras).

Both Dash Cams accept microSD cards (Class 4 required) of up to 64GB. They will ship in the fourth quarter at $169.99 suggested retail price for the Dash Cam 30 and $199.99 for the Dash Cam 35.
